Seoul Defense Dialogue: NATO experts emphasize partnership

Thursday at the Seoul Defense Dialogue, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges David van Weel emphasized the significance of deeper engagement with NATO’s allies (8 September 2022).

At a plenary discussion on hybrid warfare, he stated, “Partnerships are essential to safeguard the global commons, strengthen our resilience, and uphold the international order based on norms.” NATO is committed to developing connections with allies who share its values and objectives.” Moreover, he emphasized the significance of the Indo-Pacific for NATO, citing the possible impact of regional events on Euro-Atlantic security.

Eirini Lemos-Maniati, Deputy Director of the NATO Arms Control, Disarmament, and WMD Non-Proliferation Centre, accompanied Mr. van Weel. At a panel session on denuclearisation, she urged nations to strengthen and recommit to existing global non-proliferation and arms control regimes, stating that NATO is “working closely with our partners to address proliferation challenges, arms control, and defense against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.” Ms. Lemos-Maniati reaffirmed NATO’s unwavering commitment to the goal of North Korea’s total and irreversible denuclearization in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Earlier in the week, the two NATO officials held a variety of meetings with senior defence and foreign affairs officials from the Republic of Korea. The meetings focused on the challenges and opportunities posed by new and disruptive technologies and on strengthening our partnership to address chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks. Also discussed were cyber defense and climate change. NATO is boosting its cooperation with Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea, who attended a NATO summit in Madrid in June 2022 for the first time as a group.

The conference aims to maintain multilateral security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and create peace on the Korean Peninsula by bringing together dozens of senior officials and regional experts from around the globe. North Korea continues its provocative and dangerous behavior in the region, including missile testing, during the time of this year’s event. China is building its nuclear arsenal, increasing military cooperation with Russia, and adopting a more confrontational posture in the South China Sea and around Taiwan. TOPICS
