A recent report conducted by Ernst Young (EY) has exposed serious misconduct within the finance team of Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board, Wales’ largest health board.
The report revealed deliberate misrepresentation of financial accounts by senior members of the finance team.
It also highlighted systemic cultural failings within the team, which were known by senior leaders of the health board.

Calls for Police Investigation
During a session in the House of Commons, North Wales MP David Jones raised concerns about the situation and asked Prime Minister Rishi Sunak whether he believed a police investigation should be conducted.
In response, Sunak expressed his deep concern about the state of affairs at Betsi Cadwaladr hospital and acknowledged that it has been under special measures for a significant portion of the last eight years.
Sunak also mentioned that the official audit indicated worrying dysfunctionality.
He expressed hope for a thorough investigation and noted that Jones is in contact with the Secretary of State for Wales to address the matter.
Clarifying the Scope of the Issue
It is important to clarify that Betsi Cadwaladr is a health board and not just a hospital.
The report highlights various issues, including premature payment to suppliers before the receipt of goods.

Despite briefly being removed from special measures prior to the 2021 election, the health board has once again been placed under special measures by the Welsh Government.
