Senate passes $858B defense spending measure, reduces COVID vaccine mandate for troops

Thursday, the Senate passed a $858 billion defense funding measure that would abolish the requirement that troops undergo the COVID-19 vaccine.

The US military’s new budget was authorized after the COVID vaccination mandate for personnel was eliminated.

The Biden administration opposed efforts to include the removal of the vaccine mandate in the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, but Republican negotiators were able to effectively incorporate language repealing Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s 2021 directive.

The 2023 NDAA was approved by the Senate with an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 83-11. It will now be presented for President Biden’s signature.

This is an evolving narrative.
