Council under European Peace Facility adopts an assistance measure an assistance measure worth €25 million to support the Nigerien Armed Forces

Today, the Council adopted a €25 million assistance measure for the Republic of Niger under the European Peace Facility (EPF).

The goal of this assistance measure is to increase the skills and resiliency of the Nigerien Armed Forces so that they can preserve the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while also better defending the civilian populace from the growing terrorist threat.

The Sahel Alliance, the Sahel Coalition, and the Partnership for Security and Stability in the Sahel (P3S) are just a few of the projects that Niger is actively involved in to improve peace and development in the Sahel. The EU is fulfilling its responsibility within the framework of these efforts by providing this assistance measure.

The agreed-upon EU assistance will fund the construction of a forward operating base to lessen the vulnerability of the Armed Forces in the Tillabéri region and the establishment of an Armed Forces Technician Training Center to strengthen the Nigerien Armed Forces’ capabilities in the area of logistics support. Both projects are in line with the priorities of the Nigerien government. The Assistance Measure will be in effect for 36 months.

The EU’s clear commitment to assisting Niger and its people in their efforts to establish peace and stability in Niger and throughout the Sahel is demonstrated by this assistance measure, which sets the way for a greater Niger-EU relationship in the military and defence sector.

Background

In order to finance all CFSP (Common Foreign and Security Policy) military and defence initiatives with the goals of averting conflict, upholding peace, and enhancing global security and stability, the European Peace Facility was established in March 2021.

The European Peace Facility in particular enables the EU to fund initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of third countries as well as regional and international organisations in terms of military and defence issues.

In March 2022, Niger requested the assistance measure in a letter to the Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
