The Department of Social Development has published amendments to the rules governing the R350 Social Relief Distress (SRD) award, increasing the number of individuals who will be eligible for it.

The means-test income level was recommended to be raised to R624 by the Department of Social Development in order to qualify for the award. This follows the denial of almost 5 million applications from those who had more than R350 in their accounts during the month they had applied for.

The Department of Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu, published a gazette notice on Monday, August 15, increasing the income threshold to R624 per person, each month.

The SRD grant remains at R350 per month.
