Sean Lynch’manipulated girl’ before inappropriate behaviour, court heard

Sean Lynch is accused of manipulating a girl using the talents he formerly shared with the world’s best golfer.

Working with golfers like Jason Day, a former world No. 1 player, Sean Patrick Lynch established a solid reputation as an effective mind trainer.

But a Brisbane court has been told that Lynch also utilised the abilities he formerly had with former PGA Championship victor Day to control a female after allegedly abusing her.

Lynch, 68, is charged with grooming a girl from April 2017 to December 2019 before doing many indecent acts with the ‘talented’ young golfer.

Lynch spoke to the girl on the phone and over texts, moving on to “dirty chat” and showed her porn, according to crown prosecutor Chris Cook.

Prior to engaging in sexual activities with a “sensitive young girl,” the golf coach texted and requested several explicit images of himself, the District Court heard.

According to Mr. Cook, Lynch persuaded the girl to keep their’secret connection’ a secret from everyone, including her own family.

Lynch allegedly told her at one of the incidents that “it would assist her golf so lot,” he said.

All these persons we have heard about, including Jason Day, are effective mind coaches, according to Mr. Cook.

He was able to convince the girl to keep the information from her relatives.

She remained silent because she believed that everything Mr. Lynch did was for her benefit.

Even when she did confide in someone, the girl was too afraid, according to Mr. Cook, to divulge too much.

He provided proof from a young golfer who in late 2019 requested the girl whether Lynch should work as her mental coach.

In testimony given in court, the child said, “No, he’s a shady old guy.”

The young golfer questioned, “Why?”

Because he sexually assaulted me, the girl answered.

Later, the girl told authorities she didn’t want to reveal too much to the young golfer “because I was just afraid.”

From March 2018 through March 2019, the youngster intermittently resided in Lynch’s home, the court heard.

However, she cut off communication with Lynch in May 2019 and even blocked his phone number when she “watched something on television.”

When her testimony was read in court, the youngster said, “They (TV programme) were talking about individuals being groomed.”

For the first time, I had the thought: “I shut off all contact. That sounds precisely like what Sean was doing to me.”

According to defence attorney Tony Kimmins, certain claims against the youngster were based on her generalisations and targeted her “foggy” memory.

The girl’s police interview “was all over the place, it was very hard to follow,” the reporter said.

In the police interview that was displayed to the jury, Mr. Kimmins said that the girl also seemed to be attempting to come up with something else to say.

He saw that she often stopped and displayed a half-smile, as if she were hypnotised.

“It’s not like someone is recalling what happened,”

Lynch has entered a not guilty plea to 11 counts, including grooming and the improper abuse of a juvenile under 16 years old.

Continued trial before Judge Vicki Loury
