Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has expressed concern about the cost of the coronation ceremony during a period of rising prices and inflation.

Despite his republican views, he acknowledged that even supporters of the monarchy would want to see costs kept to a minimum.

Speaking after the event, Yousaf said that some people will have felt uncomfortable with the amount spent on the coronation, estimated to be around £100 million.

While he did not reveal his personal views on the matter, Yousaf reiterated that he hoped everything possible would be done to keep costs down.

Yousaf’s comments came during a visit to the Whitfield Community Larder in Dundee as part of the Big Help Out, a UK-wide initiative to increase volunteering.

During his visit, Yousaf donated nappies and was trained in the use of Naloxone, a nasal spray used to treat drug overdoses, and given his own Naloxone kit.

He emphasized the importance of community projects such as the Whitfield Community Larder in supporting vulnerable people and praised the efforts of volunteers across the UK.

Yousaf also spoke about the role of government in supporting community projects through funding.

He highlighted the example of the Whitfield Community Larder as a project that had received government funding at both national and local levels.

Yousaf emphasized his commitment to supporting community projects and the third sector.

Yousaf’s comments reflect the tension between the desire to celebrate historic traditions and the need to respond to current economic challenges.

While the coronation ceremony was undoubtedly an important occasion, Yousaf’s focus on community support initiatives highlights the importance of investing in projects that directly benefit those most affected by economic hardship.

His comments also reflect the ongoing debate in Scotland about the role of the monarchy and the potential costs associated with maintaining it.
