Sara Arfaoui criticizes Manchester eateries

Ilkay Gundogan’s wife, who plays for Manchester City, has criticized eateries all across the city, saying there aren’t any nice places to eat.

The 27-year-old Sara Arfaoui complained on Instagram that Manchester’s eateries are “focused on generating money with cocktails” rather than serving “poor food.”

The model, who was born in France but was raised in Italy, continued by lamenting the lack of “a true Italian, decent sushi, or simply fresh cuisine… anything frozen.”

When asked to identify her favorite restaurant in Manchester, Ms. Arfaoui—whose midfielder-playing German husband is 31—made the remarks.

She said in a post that was originally picked up by The Sun: “Sorry, I’m upset to be honest, but nothing. I looked around for a nice restaurant but the meal was terrible.

No decent sushi, authentic Italian, or simply fresh cuisine can be found; everything is frozen. Instead of focusing on serving high-quality cuisine, local restaurants choose to make money off of beverages and shots like nightclubs. Maybe in London, but nothing in Manchester. I apologize.

Jay Rayner, a culinary critic, responded to her post by telling The Sun that it was ridiculous. There are several excellent, independent eateries in Manchester.

Comments like these in trying economic times are not helpful to companies scrambling to make ends meet, it’s an incredible gem of a place to dine,’ the reply said.

After Angel Di Maria’s ex-wife Jorgelina Cardoso said in August that British cuisine is “disgusting” and “the ladies look like porcelain,” this statement was made.

Ms. Arfaoui met Gundogan early last year while working as a TV personality for Rai 1 in Italy; they later announced their engagement in December.

Before hosting a spectacular wedding for guests in Lake Como in Italy in May, the couple is said to have tied the knot at a register office in Denmark.

When Gundogan joined Manchester City in 2016 in a £21 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund, he became manager Pep Guardiola’s first acquisition for the team.

Since then, the football player from Gelsenkirchen has made 264 appearances for City and has scored 51 goals, including three in 13 games so far this season.

He participated in City’s 5-0 triumph against FC Copenhagen last night. Ms. Arfaoui shared photos of herself at the Etihad Stadium in a corporate box on Instagram.

Gundogan has played 62 times for the German national team and scored 16 goals, including one last week at Wembley versus England in a Nations League encounter.
