SAPS Ready For National Shutdown, If It Happens

Following the recent increase in gasoline prices, rumors of a national shutdown began to circulate on social media in the form of unsigned tweets and banners.

According to the rumors, significant unions and taxi groups will join the protest in order to bring the country to a halt. Neither SANTACO nor the NTA have confirmed their involvement, and both have distanced themselves from the strike.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) acknowledged that it is aware of the possibility of a national shutdown on June 10th. The institution, which is made up of numerous government security departments, stated that it has taken steps to protect the country’s safety.

“Those behind these messages are warned and reminded that prohibiting people’s freedom of movement is a criminal offence.

“Members of the public are therefore cautioned against spreading such messages that seek to mobilize communities to respond to the shutdown,” said police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe in a statement on Thursday, 9 June.

NATJOINTS encourages citizens to collaborate with law enforcement and warns that any conduct that violates the law will be dealt with harshly.
