Sam Smith has successfully overcame body dysmorphia after battling with embracing their image for their whole life.

The singer of “Unholy,” who identifies as non-binary and uses “they/them” pronouns, acknowledged that the road to self-acceptance hasn’t always been easy.

The Grammy winner acknowledged that they never matched the “norm” and said, “There is absolutely the issue of, ‘What should a pop star look like?’ inside my profession.”

In order to promote their new album, “Gloria,” the “Stay With Me” hitmaker chose to face their worst fears and strip off their tops.

When Smith started to see themselves differently in 2018, things for the British musician improved throughout their “Thrill of It All” tour.

“When I was 25, I returned from a tour worn out. I looked to people in the body world as role models. Every time I went to the pool, I struggled to take off my top because I felt self-conscious.

“I have the opposite of body dysmorphia now, so it paid off. I feel gorgeous. I’m now beginning to tan. I have burns where I have never had burns.

Body dysmorphia is a mental health condition when a person cannot stop obsessing about a perceived imperfection or defect in their appearance, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Smith started to care less about what internet trolls have to say about them after learning to enjoy the flesh they’re in.

The singer said, “I become closer to who I am with each album,” claiming that their latest record was motivated by the “feminine spirit in me.”

On Gloria, I feel more at ease with myself. Smith stated, “I feel emancipated, freed from constraints I felt when I was young. “My mother claims that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less concerned about what others think. She often gets things right.

Following criticism of the singer’s provocative, skin-baring outfits in their new music video for “I’m Not Here to Make Friends,” Smith was recently defended by ardent fans.

The 30-year-old singer flaunts a number of daring looks by fashion designer Christian Cowan in the videos, from a feathered headpiece and high-slit skirt fit for a showgirl to a bejeweled corset and matching breast pasties.

Despite the music video’s lighthearted nature, some reviewers were upset, calling it “vile and demonic” and charging that Smith was “shoving their sexuality in everyone’s face by wearing it like a costume.”
