Rust manufacturing resumes, but not in New Mexico

Rust will resume filming in January, more than a year after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on set.

However, Variety claims that the production will not take place in New Mexico, where a criminal probe and state occupational safety processes remain unresolved.

Rust Movie Productions LLC’s attorney, Melina Spadone, stated that the production is still in search of a new location, but California is a possibility.

According to “Variety,” the production firm announced a deal with the widower of the cameraman, Matthew Hutchins, on October 5. Under the terms of the deal, production can resume after a 15-month delay.

Matthew stated in a statement that the completion of the film would “honor Halyna’s final work.”

On October 21, 2021, Halyna was shot while preparing a scene at a church with actor Alec Baldwin. Baldwin fired a rifle that he was informed was “cold.”

The gunshot traveled through her body and lodged in director Joel Souza’s shoulder, according to “Variety.” She was transported to a hospital, where she ultimately passed away.

Later that day, Souza, who is returning to complete the film, was released from the hospital.

Since then, investigators have concluded that Hannah Gutierrez Reed loaded one live bullet into Baldwin’s firearm. Additional live rounds were discovered on the set.

A portion of the original cast and crew have expressed doubts about the project’s revival.
