Rishi Sunak urges NATO to resist Vladimir Putin and help Ukraine

Today, Rishi Sunak will urge Western partners to withstand Vladimir Putin’s assault and “double down” on their military assistance for Ukraine.

In advance of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion, the Prime Minister will issue a rallying call during a worldwide security conference.

He will emphasize that supporting Kiev’s war effort is not just about Ukraine’s security and sovereignty, but that of ‘every nation’ due to the ‘broader threat to all we hold dear’

He will emphasize the United Kingdom’s commitment of £2.3 billion since the outbreak of war, which includes combat tanks, enhanced air defense systems, military training, and longer-range missiles.

He will warn that the level of help granted to Ukraine by the international community last year must be matched within weeks, not months.

In addition, he would advocate for a new NATO charter to safeguard Ukraine against future Russian aggression, so ensuring continued assistance.

He is anticipated to say during the conference in Germany, “Now is the time to increase our military support.”Russian President Vladimir Putin (right) and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (left) shake hands during a meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence, outside Moscow, Russia, February 17

Putin bet that our commitment would waver when he initiated this conflict. Even today, he wagers that we will lose our composure.

Yet, we proved him incorrect then, and we will continue to do so now. We must do more to enhance the long-term security of Ukraine.

We must provide them with the advanced, NATO-standard capabilities they require for the foreseeable future.

He will continue, ‘What is at risk in this battle is considerably more than the security and independence of a single nation. It concerns the security and independence of every nation.

Because Russia’s invasion, its terrible war crimes, and its irresponsible nuclear language are symbolic of a larger threat to all that we hold dear, we must take action.Ukrainian emergency workers pull down and ensure safety of residential apartment building struck by a Russian missile that exploded mid-morning the day before, killing three people, in Pokrovsk, Ukraine, on February 16

Later today, Mr. Sunak hopes to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the Munich Security Conference.

The conference, which is dominated by NATO members, brings together leaders from similar nations to address security concerns.

The vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, is scheduled to speak before Mr. Sunak.

Next Friday will mark one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Yesterday, when he addressed the conference via video link, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky encouraged world leaders to expedite their assistance for his nation.

Kyiv is concerned that vital supplies will arrive too slowly for the defense against further offensives.

Mr. Zelensky stated, “We need to hurry up.” “We require swiftness – swiftness of our agreements, swiftness of our delivery, swiftness of decisions to limit Russian potential,”

He stated that there was no other option because lives were at stake.

Mr. Macron, speaking after Mr. Zelensky, encouraged friends to “intensify our support” for Ukraine in order to assist its soldiers in starting a counteroffensive.

Mr. Scholz emphasized that German help was “built to last” but took a veiled jab at other allies for their faltering efforts to supply tanks to Ukraine.

Berlin has committed to send some of its most advanced armaments, but is having difficulty convincing its friends to do the same.

“Those who are able to send such battle tanks should do so immediately,” Mr. Scholz said at the meeting.

So far, Ukraine’s requests for fighter jets have fallen on deaf ears.
