Representatives convened in Geneva to discuss Syria

Representatives of the Arab League, Egypt, France, Germany, the European Union, Iraq, Jordan, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United States joined the United Kingdom in approving:

Reaffirm our commitment to finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254, including our continued support for the Constitutional Committee, free and fair elections, an immediate national ceasefire, the end of arbitrary detention, and the release of everyone who has been wrongfully detained.

Reiterate the need to establish safe conditions for the safe, honourable, and voluntarily return of refugees and internally displaced people in accordance with UNHCR standards. In the meantime, support the provision of adequate and long-lasting aid to the displaced as well as their host countries and communities.

We restated our commitment to the goals of the Global Coalition Against Daesh and the fight against terrorism in all its manifestations and forms while taking note with worry of the ongoing danger presented by Daesh.

Call on all parties, especially the group nominated by the government, to resume Constitutional Committee meetings, which are currently taking place in Geneva under UN auspices, in order to advance a comprehensive political solution that will safeguard Syria’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty as well as the rights and dignity of all Syrians.

reiterate our sustained support for UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and his persistent efforts to progress a UN-facilitated political process consistent with UNSC resolution 2254. Reiterate that there is no military solution to the Syrian problem.

Remain very worried about Syria’s terrible humanitarian situation and the country’s people’s continuous suffering.

We emphasised the need to continue providing life-saving and early recovery humanitarian aid throughout Syria using all available means, including the expansion and extension of the cross-border aid mechanism established by UNSC resolution 2642, for which there is no substitute that can match its scope and scale.

In addition, stress the need of maintaining pressure on those responsible for all atrocities and international crimes committed in Syria, including the use of chemical weapons, as well as the need for a complete accounting of those who are missing.
