Omokri described Tinubu’s response as “knee-jerk” and stated that it made him appear small in the eyes of the public.

The EU’s final report on the 2023 general polls highlighted the enduring systemic weaknesses exposed by the election.

It emphasized the need for further legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability.

In response to the Union’s submission, Reno Omokri expressed his belief that Tinubu missed a significant opportunity to acknowledge the flaws in the last election.

He suggested that Tinubu should have followed the example of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who accepted that the election which brought him to power was not perfect.

Omokri argued that Tinubu could have assured Nigerians of improved future elections.

Omokri clarified that the EU report was not highly critical, nor did it cast doubt on Tinubu’s victory.

It merely pointed out shortcomings on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Specifically, it mentioned concerns related to the recruitment process and the integrity of INEC’s technology.

Omokri noted that INEC itself has not refuted the EU’s findings, suggesting their validity.

Omokri expressed his belief that Tinubu could have handled the situation better.

Instead of a knee-jerk reaction, he recommended a diplomatic response along the lines of acknowledging the EU’s observations while expressing a differing viewpoint.

Such a response, in Omokri’s opinion, would have demonstrated maturity and satisfied everyone involved.
