Rangers lose to Oilers in boo-filled third period at MSG

In their first home game in nearly two weeks, the Rangers were booed off the ice at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers surrendered four goals in the third period, including three in the first 10 and a half minutes, allowing the Oilers to force their way into a game they had no business being in after 40 minutes of dominance by the Rangers. As has been the case far too often this season, the Rangers’ 20-minute lapse lost them the game Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, 4-3.

Less than three minutes into the third period, with K’Andre Miller in the penalty box for hooking Warren Foegele, Evan Bouchard scored his first goal of the season to put Edmonton on the board. Approximately three minutes later, the Oilers defenceman scored the second goal, a slap shot through traffic that trimmed the Rangers’ advantage to 3-2.

Igor Shesterkin, who was in pursuit of his second shutout of the season until the 4:39 mark of the final 20 minutes of the third period, slipped up. Dylan Holloway scored his first NHL goal with a wrist shot that Shesterkin would typically block.

Alexis Lafreniere was then called for removing Tyson Barrie’s helmet with less than two and a half minutes remaining in regulation, which Oilers star Leon Draisaitl pounced on to finish his team’s remarkable comeback.

Lafreniere, Chris Kreider and Julien Gauthier scored the Rangers’ goals.
