Putin forced to turn to China for copycat drones as Iranian supplies depletes

According to officials, Vladimir Putin has been compelled to seek out military drones from China’s Xi Jinping due to low supplies from Iran. Over the winter, Russia used Iranian-made drones for attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

However, with Western sanctions slowing down the Iranian supply chain, Putin is reportedly in talks with a Chinese manufacturer about purchasing 100 ZT-180 drones, which are believed to be ‘copycat’ versions of the Iranian drones.

The drones are expected to be delivered in April. The Chinese drone manufacturer, Xian Bingo Intelligent Aviation Technology, has also proposed providing Russia with components and expertise to enable it to manufacture 100 drones each month.

European Union officials have warned that Russia is running low on stocks of Iranian-made drones. In recent months, the Russian military has deployed hundreds of Iran’s Shahed 136 drones, but most of them were downed by Ukraine’s air defences.

This shortage follows Ukraine’s spy chief’s claims that Russia was attempting to purchase more shells from Iran after having procured 20,000 shells.
