Using marijuana every day increases the risk of developing heart disease – new study

According to a study presented by the American College of Cardiology, daily marijuana use increases the risk of developing heart disease. People who used cannabis every day were approximately one-third more likely to develop coronary artery disease (CAD) than those who had never used it.

Researchers analyzed data from a cohort of 175,000 individuals and found that daily marijuana users were 34% more likely to develop CAD than those who never used marijuana.

Monthly marijuana use, however, did not appear to be linked to CAD diagnoses. Researchers hypothesized that the interaction between tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the plant’s psychoactive ingredient, and the heart and blood vessels’ receptors may promote inflammation and plaque buildup.

While marijuana has become legalized in various states, experts warn that it poses health risks, and users are encouraged to inform their doctors to better monitor their heart health.

Researchers suggest that more studies are needed to understand the health effects of marijuana as legalization continues to expand.
