TASS reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the trilateral meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that took place in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of the informal Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Summit.
Putin began the bilateral discussion with the Armenian prime minister by noting that the three presidents were able to communicate on Monday, December 26.
Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian president, stated that Putin, Aliyev, and Pashinyan had no intention of holding a trilateral meeting during the CIS summit. According to him, bilateral discussions would be held in conjunction with the summit.
The conflict in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic dominated the discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to RIA Novosti.
“Of course, the most important problem is the resolution of the conflict in the South Caucasus as a whole, the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, and everything relating to Karabakh,” stated the Russian president.
Previously, the Armenian government refused to participate in a trilateral meeting with Azerbaijan. Prior to this, Pashinyan notified Azerbaijan that Armenia was willing to sign the deal on its own conditions and gave Azerbaijan the peace agreement’s clauses.
