Pub landlord jailed for harassing ex with texts and abuse accusations

The award-winning landlord of a tavern was incarcerated for harassment when the judge rejected his charges against his ex-girlfriend.

Cardiff Magistrates Court heard that 53-year-old Welsh host Gareth Slattery hounded her with unwelcome texts and showed up at her business, residence, and attorneys’ offices.

The court was informed that Slattery, who resides in Barry, Wales, initiated a campaign of “planned and purposeful” harassment against his ex-partner after their eight-month relationship ended in 2021.

The victim was identified in a video on the social media platform TikTok in which Slattery accused her of being a narcissist and an abuser.

He stated, “I am a 53-year-old domestic violence victim.” I am not heard as a male victim… this is what you have done to me.Slattery owns the award-winning Butterfly Collector pub in Barry, south Wales

The harassment allegedly occurred between August and September of last year.

After a trial, Slattery was convicted of harassment without violence.

District Judge Stephen Harmes stated that Slattery, who has prior convictions for harassment and violation of a restraining order, attempted to claim he was a victim of abuse, but he really assaulted his victim in a ‘vile’ manner.

In Barry, south Wales, Slattery owns the award-winning Butterfly Collector bar.

After their relationship ended last August, Slattery, the owner of the Butterfly Collector bar in Barry, which won the 2019 SME National Business Awards Pub of the Year, began his campaign of harassment.

In 2019, the Butterfly Collector bar was named Pub of the Year by the SME National Business Awards.

Prosecutor Georgia Donohue stated that the victim was tagged in a now-removed video that was broadcast online on August 23, 2021, one day before he showed up at her office.

Ms. Donohue reported that Slattery stood outside her office and called her on the phone, stating, “I will not approach you.” No more herpes and chlamydia, please.’

The court heard that the victim consulted her attorney the next day after hearing Slattery yell, “You piece of s***! You bit of garbage.

Ms. Donohue stated, “She observed the accused standing there.” She knew the comments were directed at her because she was the only person in the vicinity.

On August 26, the woman reportedly heard her ex yelling about herpes as she was in her bedroom.

The next day, on her way to Tesco, she recognized him and said, “Please don’t talk to me, I’m not allowed to speak to you.”

However, he yelled that the victim “had herpes” while the call handler was on the phone with 999.

Aled Owen, who represents him, informed the court that his client’s offense occurred more than a year ago.

His attorney stated, “He has moved on and is now dating a professional woman.”

Mr. Owen stated that he employed four people at his tavern, all of whom would lose their jobs if he were arrested.

Judge Harmes stated, “I find that he intended to make her life miserable. It was pretty purposeful and calculated.

This was the worst form of harassment possible. You have a history of harassment, and this was a terrible case.’

Slattery, of Barry, was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, ordered to pay £500 in restitution to the victim, and given a five-year restraining order.
