Thursday afternoon, the Queen passed away in her Scottish holiday residence, Balmoral. She was 96 years old.

In a statement posted to the new Prince and Princess of Wales’ Instagram account, William expressed his “extreme gratitude” despite his grief over the loss of his grandmother, whom he referred to as “Grannie.”

A tweet from The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincess).

“On Thursday, the world lost an exceptional leader whose devotion to the nation, the Realms, and the Commonwealth was unwavering. In the next days, so much will be said about the significance of her historic rule “The prince’s declaration says.

He proceeded: “I have however lost my granny. And while I will mourn her passing, I am also quite appreciative. In my fifth decade, I have benefited from The Queen’s knowledge and reassurance. Twenty years ago, she guided and supported my wife. My three children must spend the holidays with her and form memories that will last a lifetime.”

William said that the Queen was “by my side” during his best and worst times, and that he will “respect her memory” by supporting his father, King Charles III.

William wrote, “I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of living without Grannie sinks in.” “I appreciate her generosity toward my family and me. And I applaud her on behalf of my generation for giving a model of service and decency in public life that was from a different era, but is still applicable to us all now.”

The princess closed her speech by quoting the Queen: “My grandmother once remarked that suffering is the cost of love. All of the sorrow we will experience in the coming weeks will be evidence of the deep affection we had for our magnificent queen.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ representatives did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
