In their Netflix documentary, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle describe the precise moment the royal family felt threatened by the duchess’ popularity.
When they attended a Remembrance Day ceremony with other senior members of the family in November 2018 and all the press attention centered on Markle, according to Harry, his wife “finally got it.”
Markle recalls in “Harry & Meghan,” which began streaming its final episodes on Thursday, her reaction to seeing her photo on the front page of the Telegraph newspaper the next morning.
Harry adds in, “She remarked, ‘But it’s not my fault,’ and I responded, ‘I know. And my mother felt the same.”
The Duke of Sussex, 38, was referring to Princess Diana’s controversial 1995 “Panorama” interview, in which she revealed that his father, King Charles III, was dissatisfied that she received the majority of attention and adulation during the former couple’s 1983 Australian royal visit.
Ironically, Markle’s friend Lucy Fraser believes the palace was unnerved by the 41-year-old Duchess of Sussex’s reception on her 2018 visit to Australia.
Insinuating that Markle’s popularity surpassed that of the heirs to the throne, Harry also takes a jab at Charles, 74, and presumably his brother Prince William and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.
“The issue is when someone who should be a supporting act steals the spotlight or does a greater job than the one who was born to do this,” he says.
“It tips the scales because you’ve been trained to believe that the only way your charities can flourish and your name can grow or be enhanced is if you appear on the front page of those publications.
“However, the media determines who is on the first page,” he continues.
In 2020, Harry and Markle gave up their royal duties and moved to the United States, where they currently reside with their two children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1.
