Premier League Says Man City Lied About Financial Position, Manager’s Pay

Premier League accuses Manchester City of failing to submit “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position” between 2009 and 2018, as well as “complete details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts” between 2009 and 2013.

Monday, the Premier League accused Manchester City of violating financial regulations from 2009 to 2018, a period in which the club became a major force in English and European soccer following its ownership by Abu Dhabi’s ruling family.

The second group of alleged violations relates to the seasons 2009/10 to 2012/13, inclusive, and the provision “requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager.”

Between December 2009 and May 2013, the club was led by current Italy manager Roberto Mancini.

After a four-year inquiry, the Premier League issued a statement listing a litany of alleged violations of laws by Manchester City. During the affected era, the team won three Premier League championships, in 2012, 2014, and 2018.

The club was also charged with failing to comply with UEFA regulations from 2013 to 2018, Premier League profitability and sustainability criteria from 2015 to 2018, and with assisting the league’s investigation from December 2018 to the present.

The club has not yet responded to the charges.

If found guilty, the punishment and penalties will be based on a wide range of sanctions that are likewise the exclusive prerogative of the Premier League.

Under Abu Dhabi, Manchester City has won six Premier League crowns, two FA Cups, and six English League Cups.

European football’s governing body barred City from UEFA competitions for two years in February 2020 for suspected violations of its FFP criteria, but the sentence was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July of the same year.

City was fined 10 million euros (about $11.3 million at the time) for failing to comply with investigators.
