PRASA is restoring long-distance services after theft, vandalism, and logistical issues

The theft and damage of train infrastructure, as well as logistical problems, temporarily disrupted long-distance services, but the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is again reviving such services.

“The company must react to the expectations and travel requirements of long-distance travellers as per its mission,” the agency said in a statement. “The increase in fuel prices, road congestion, and growing expenses of lodging have forced the business.”

This year, PRASA is concentrating on corridors with strong demand, and work is already being done to revitalize the route from Johannesburg to Musina.

According to PRASA, the Musina route recovery work has progressed, and on September 2, 2022, services between Johannesburg and Makhado through Polokwane are expected to resume.

As part of our declaration of purpose and commitment to recover the Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal route, PRASA is also happy to announce that final preparations are under way for the special charter service to KwaZulu-Natal for the Comrades Marathon.

According to the agency, “Mainline Passenger Services’ strategic pillars for income creation via special events and seasonal train services” include the implementation of the special charter train service.

Anyone intending to travel to KwaZulu-Natal for the Comrades Marathon weekend, including participants and their families as well as members of the general public seeking a weekend escape in the province, are welcome to use this service.

“Shosholoza Meyl will provide the public an alternate, secure, and reasonably priced way of long-distance travel during the 2022 Comrades Marathon weekend because to the increasing demand for lodging and growing gasoline prices.

“This would provide Comrades runners and travelers with an all-inclusive bundle of financial relief and assist reduce traffic congestion on our roadways. The service is divided into two classes: economy class and the tourist class provided by our premier class train, according to PRASA.

The affordable service offers lodging and a roundtrip on KZN’s picturesque highways for as little as R870.

The whole time of the tour, catering will be offered for purchase.

“Passengers traveling in premium classe may look forward to a roundtrip on the beautiful KZN route, plush lodging, a hot shower, supper, and breakfast, as well as entertainment. The Wits University Physiotherapy Department will provide complimentary massages and physiotherapy sessions.

“After the marathon, the train arrives back in Johannesburg on August 28 at 8 a.m. The train leaves on August 26.

“The 2022 Comrades Marathon has given PRASA the chance to show its dedication to restoring the corridors and providing top-notch services.

As we restore our services, it is also a chance to show our tenacity, perseverance, and sense of teamwork, according to the agency.
