PRASA Board and Executive Management to give a detailed account of the interventions made to recover and stabilise the organisation for peak performance

Following years of poor management and allegations of corruption, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Board and Executive Management will give a detailed account of the interventions made to recover and stabilise the organisation for peak performance.

The minister of transport, Mr. Fikile Mbalula, will also be present.

This is a component of the Minister’s oversight visit to monitor the Board’s progress toward achieving its goals to turnaround PRASA as required by the Shareholders’ Compact.

The Minister will then provide a thorough explanation of the agency’s Reconstruction and Recovery programme, including the decisions made to prevent unauthorised spending.

The Board will also discuss the actions taken to combat corruption and the implementation of the Report on the Public Protector’s inquiry into claims of administrative misconduct involving financial mismanagement, procurement irregularities, and appointment irregularities.

In order to track the recovery of the lines, the Minister and the PRASA Board will also visit the closed corridors in Gauteng (Leralla to JHB, Naledi to JHB, and Pienaarspoort to PTA).

R57 billion in transfers from the department to PRASA, or an estimated 27.2 percent of the department’s budget over the medium term.

A R53 billion, extensive rail renovation initiative is already being carried out by PRASA.
