Powerball jackpot just short of world record hits astonishing $1.5 billion

The Powerball jackpot is close to the global record for lottery prizes.

No winning tickets were sold for Wednesday night’s $1.2 billion top prize, so the projected jackpot for Saturday night’s drawing will be at least $1.5 billion, according to Powerball officials.

Currently, that would fall just shy of the world-record Powerball jackpot of $1.586 billion that three winners split in 2016. The jackpot could increase if sufficient tickets are sold prior to the drawing.

A jackpot of $1.5 billion would trail just the world record and the $1.537 billion Mega Millions prize.

Wednesday night’s winning numbers were 02, 11, 22, 35, 60, and 23 for the Powerball.

Since the last jackpot winner on August 3, there have been 39 consecutive drawings with no jackpot winner. The Powerball record for the most of consecutive draws without a grand prize winner is 40.

Winners of the jackpot might receive either an annuity paid out over 29 years or a single sum payment. The projected cash value of Saturday night’s jackpot is at least $745,9 million. This is all before taxes.

The probability of winning the Powerball jackpot is 1 in 292,2 million.

Each Powerball ticket costs $2.

They are available for purchase in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET, Powerball drawings are aired live and streamed live on  Powerball.com.
