Police Parade Four Suspects in Murder Case of Retired Judge in Benue State

The Benue State Police Command has conducted a parade of four suspects believed to be connected to the murder of Mrs. Margaret Igbetar, a retired President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal.

The tragic incident involving the 72-year-old retired judge occurred at her residence on Wantor Kwange Street in the Makurdi metropolis of the state on August 24.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Bathelomew Onyeka, took charge of the parade and disclosed details about the alleged culprits involved in the murder of the judge.

He revealed that on August 24, 2023, the command received a report of culpable homicide concerning the late Justice Igbetar (rtd).

Following the report, Aondohemba Joseph, a nephew of the deceased, was promptly apprehended. However, a more extensive and advanced investigation was initiated when the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and subsequently handed over to the Operation Zenda investigative team for further proceedings.

Onyeka provided additional information, stating, “The suspect who eventually confessed to having planned and recruited other people to help him in killing his aunty led a team of detectives to Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area of the state where the following suspects were arrested; Igbazenda Gbidye, 63 years old, and Dzungwenen Ukor, 40 years old.”

He continued, “These suspects admitted that Aondohemba Joseph had reported to them that his father died and left so much property in the hands of his aunty (the deceased) and she had refused to hand the said property over to him. They agreed to join him in eliminating her so that he could have access to his property.”

Furthermore, Onyeka mentioned that one Akuhwa Barnabas, aged 32 and a driver to the deceased, was also arrested. Barnabas corroborated the statements of the other suspects, confirming that he facilitated the gang’s access to the house and assisted in the execution of the tragic act.

The investigation into this disturbing case continues, and the suspects are now in custody, awaiting legal proceedings.
