Police investigate as last turret falls off military memorial to seven amphibious tanks

In 1944, during rehearsals for D-Day, a 1944 amphibious tank sank, and the police are currently investigating the incident.

One of the seven Duplex Drive Valentine tanks that lie 800 yards off the coast of Studland Bay in Dorset is missing its single turret.

The location is designated as both a war grave and an underwater historical landmark.

Experts suspect the wreck may have been disturbed by military enthusiasts who frequent the area. However, there is now concern that human remains may be uncovered.

Professor David Parham from the University of Bournemouth told The Mail on Sunday, ‘The turret is currently laying next to the tank. The mishap has uncovered a heap of fragile organic archeological material.

‘We also know that six people perished when these tanks were lost, so it is likely that someone is still inside.

Five of the bodies could not be located.

Historic England stated that it was collaborating with police. According to a spokesperson for Dorset Police, the damage is believed to have occurred last month.
