Police in Northern Ireland has more time to question suspect

Police in Northern Ireland has been granted more time to question a suspect in connection with the shooting of off-duty officer Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

The 43-year-old man was arrested on Friday in the attempted murder investigation and is one of six men, aged 22, 38, 43, 45, 47 and 71, taken into custody in recent days.

Caldwell was shot in front of his young son in Omagh, Co Tyrone, last week and remains critically ill.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has described the incident as a terrorist attack and says the New IRA is its primary line of inquiry.

Detectives are urging anyone with information about the attack to contact them.

Caldwell was targeted while coaching a youth football team at a sports centre.

Police have appealed for photos, CCTV footage and dashcam footage to be sent to them via the Major Incident Public Portal.
