Plan to ban fishing off the north-east coast of England is cancelled

The plan to ban fishing off the north-east coast of England, particularly in a 50 square-mile zone around Lindisfarne and parts of the Farne Islands, has been cancelled.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) had proposed creating a ‘highly protected marine area’ (HPMA) around Lindisfarne and conducted a consultation on the matter last year.

However, due to opposition from residents and the Northumberland County Council, Environment Secretary Therese Coffey announced in a letter to Berwick-upon-Tweed MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan that the government would not designate Lindisfarne as an HPMA and that fishing could continue.

Instead, the government will consider other potential sites for HPMA designation.

The decision was welcomed by residents and fishermen, who had argued that the proposed ban would have threatened the community’s fishing heritage and local economy.
