On June 27, 2022, at the Palais Ntare Rushatsi in Bujumbura, Marie Charlotte G. Tang, Philippine Ambassador to Kenya and Non-Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Burundi, submitted her credentials to President Evariste Ndayishimiye.

Burundi will commemorate its 60th anniversary of independence on July 1, 2022, and Ambassador Tang sent his congratulations to the president and people of Burundi.

She stated her desire to collaborate with Burundian officials to strengthen their country’s bilateral ties and inter-ethnic relations.

President Ndayishimiye expressed his appreciation for the friendly ties between Burundi and the Philippines and said that the Philippines could contribute its knowledge in a variety of areas to aid in Burundi’s growth.

President Ndayishimiye was also presented with the credentials of ambassadors from Romania, Hungary, Algeria, Indonesia, and Malawi in addition to Ambassador Tang.

Ambassador Tang also met with the Permanent Secretary Ferdinand Bashikako of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation during her stay in Bujumbura.

She collaborated with UN organisations, manufacturing firms, and religious organisations while meeting with the country’s small Filipino minority.

East Africa’s Great Lakes area contains the tiny landlocked nation of Burundi. Although Bujumbura continues to be the largest city and the main commercial centre of the nation, the capital was shifted to Gitega in 2018.

In 2017, Burundi and the Philippines formally established diplomatic ties.
