People in North Korea have taken to wearing face masks with mysterious accessories on them

In recent weeks, people in North Korea have been sporting face masks with mysterious accessories attached to them. The purpose and function of these accessories remain unexplained, although a common Western theory suggests that they could be an indicator of Covid vaccination or other health status.

The trend has been observed by American website NK News, which analyses state media coverage in North Korea. The wearing of masks has become more prevalent since mid-January when Pyongyang was preparing for a large-scale military parade involving tens of thousands of people. Despite Covid restrictions having been lifted in most countries across the world, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has imposed strict masking and social distancing restrictions.

The accessories, which are approximately an inch long and oval-shaped, are either attached to the front of the mask or clipped onto the ear strings. They come in various colors, including light blue, black, white, yellow, green, and pink. Martin Weiser, a North Korea expert, has speculated that the accessories could contain small chips that store readable health or screening status. However, alternative theories suggest that they could be air fresheners or purifiers.

Although the mask accessories are most prevalent in Pyongyang, they are also common in Phyongsong, Sinuiju, Chongjin, Kanggye, Kaesong, Wonsan, and Samjiyon. Their emergence might suggest that North Koreans are being vaccinated, as Kim Jong-un hinted would be the case in the fall. NK News has reported that more North Koreans have started to wear double masks, with a regular public service announcement recommending the practice, which reportedly provides 90% protection from Covid infection compared to 40% with just one mask.

North Korea is now one of the only places in the world where outdoor mask-wearing is required, despite Kim Jong-un reportedly claiming that the virus does not pose a threat at events where he is present and, in some cases, instructing people to remove their masks. The country reintroduced mask restrictions in September, just a month after declaring victory over a nationwide Covid wave over the summer. North Korea still prohibits all travel into the country from other nations, including tourists, government officials, and aid delegations.
