Paul Williams fined £900 for road rage in Widnes

The CEO of a company who hit a man in the face during a road rage incident was nursing a bruised wallet today after he attacked a man in the face after a minor road rage incident as they discarded domestic garbage at a council trash tip.

At Warrington magistrates court Williams, of Widnes who earns £35,000 a year was ordered to pay Mr Nugent £100 compensation after he admitted assault by beating. He was also fined £652 with £150 in costs and a victim surcharge. He had originally denied the charge and was due to stand trial later in the year

Sentencing Williams JP Stephen Walton told him: 'You have never been to court before. We hope it is the last time as well'

Paul Williams, a 49-year-old sales manager, and his disabled wife became embroiled in a weird altercation with Peter Nugent after requesting that he move his car so they could park and access garbage recycling containers.

During the argument on a Saturday afternoon in Widnes, Cheshire, in front of several residents, Williams’ wife allegedly threw insults at Mr. Nugent, while Williams himself claimed the victim called her a “f***ing t***.”

Paul Williams, shown yesterday outside Warrington Magistrates’ Court, hit Peter Nugent in the face on March 5 during a dispute about parking at a council waste recycling centre in Widnes.

It culminated with Williams exiting the passenger side of his family vehicle and yelling, “Do not speak to your wife like that!” before hitting Mr. Nugent in the chin and knocking off his glasses.

As the victim was left with facial bruising and a cut, he observed Williams unloading his vehicle before it was driven away.

After pleading guilty to assault by beating at Warrington magistrates court, Williams of Widnes, who makes £35,000 annually, was sentenced to pay Mr. Nugent £100 in restitution. In addition, he received a $652 fine, £150 in expenses, and a victim surcharge.

Initially denying the accusation, he was scheduled to stand trial later in the year.

The prosecutor, Miss Laura Simpson, stated at the hearing, “On March 5, around 4.30 p.m., the victim, Peter Nugent, was disposing of things at the Widnes domestic trash recycling center.”

“A female motorist began yelling insults at him and ordered him to move his car, and this defendant, who was a passenger in the automobile being driven by the female, then approached the victim.”

The defendant ordered the victim to move his vehicle before punching him in the chin, inflicting a cut and a reddening. The victim retrieved his glasses off the floor and then observed the offender unloading his vehicle and leaving.

The bruising and laceration on his chin lasted around one week.

Williams did not have any prior convictions. In mitigation, defense attorney Mark Lever stated that the victim had been violent to his client’s wife prior to the assault and that he believed he was going to be hit.

Mr. Lever stated, “This was a very unpleasant occurrence at the Widnes dump in March. He admitted to assaulting Mr. Nugent. According to him, Mr. Nugent was hostile and impolite to his disabled wife. He described her as a “f****** t***.”

He went about saying, “Do not speak to my wife in that manner.” He expected to be struck, yet he acknowledges that he punched him once in the chin. He has never been in trouble and has never appeared in court.

Imprisoning Williams JP Stephen Walton informed him, “You’ve never gone to court.” We also hope this is the final time.

This is plainly out of character, given that he has a serious work. He made an instantaneous decision. He could have averted a conflict by taking a step back, which he did not do. The fact that he is before the court this morning causes him immense shame and embarrassment.

However, I do not believe the complaint has done himself any favors. He earns roughly £35,000 every year. He is a manager of sales.

‘He made a mistake. I would not anticipate seeing him before the court again. Initially, he intended to defend his case in court, but after reflection, he realized he had overreacted and apologized.

Mr. Nugent was not present in court to be questioned regarding Williams’ claims against him.
