Passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight experienced a terrifying ordeal on Friday when the plane hit turbulence during its approach to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina.

Nicholas Reed, who was travelling with his girlfriend Krys Spence, described the experience as “quite a horrifying experience” as the plane shook “like crazy” and the wings were flapping and shaking. Two passengers were vomiting, and another passed out due to a panic attack during the rough landing, according to the couple.

The flight was eventually aborted at the last second at 1,350 feet. The Southwest flight was diverted to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where passengers were held on the aircraft for two hours before being taken to the airport.

There, they spent almost four hours waiting for another flight without their luggage. Reed said that some passengers went behind a bar and poured themselves drinks because there was no security. The replacement plane finally arrived at 1 a.m. on Saturday, with passengers arriving in Raleigh at 4 a.m.

Southwest Airlines said that the turbulent landing was due to “weather conditions at RDU.”

The airline said that it had made the decision to divert the flight to Myrtle Beach and bring in another crew and aircraft to transport passengers to their final destination “as soon as we were able to safely do so.”

owever, Reed said that the airline did not offer meal vouchers or any compensation for the ordeal, despite being regular Southwest customers.
