Parliament shakes as MPs debate earthquake insurance in Liechtenstein

The parliament of Liechtenstein was discussing earthquake insurance when an earthquake happened.

A politician is seen on video discussing the potential of an earthquake as two earthquakes strike the building.

Frequently, the German-speaking principality records tiny earthquakes capable of causing modest harm.
Something is being loaded.

On Thursday, two tremors struck the parliament building of Liechtenstein, bringing the topic of earthquake insurance to the attention of legislators who were discussing it.

In a video shared to social media last week, Bettina Petzold-Maehr, a member of parliament, discusses the potential of a quake harming Liechtenstein inhabitants.

Thursday at approximately 2:00 p.m., Petzold-Maehr was mid-sentence when a minor earthquake struck, according to the Associated Press.

She laughed and continued speaking until a second earthquake shook the room significantly.

According to an AP translation, a person named Albert Frick can be heard stating, “This is becoming a bit much, you never know if there will be aftershocks.”

The session was deferred for 15 minutes, as reported by the publication.

Thursday afternoon, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook the Liechtenstein city of Vaduz, where the country’s parliament is located, according to the United States Geological Survey.

No injuries or property damage were reported, according to AP, which cited the Liechtenstein police.

Occasionally, quakes measuring 5.4 or less on the Richter scale can be felt by people, but they typically inflict only modest damage, if any, to structures.

Since 1955, according to AllQuakes, a website that monitors the history of earthquake reports, Liechtenstein, a micronation of 39,000 inhabitants, has routinely documented tremors between 4 and 5.3 on the Richter scale.

According to AllQuakes, it has not documented any further significant earthquakes during this time period.
