One killed, two injured after a small plane crashed in Long Island

A small plane crashed in a Long Island neighborhood on Sunday, killing one person and injuring two others. The Piper PA 28 was carrying three people when it crashed near Fifth Street and North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst around 3 p.m., according to Suffolk County police.

The dramatic Ring camera footage shows the plane’s engine roaring before a large bang and an explosion followed by a plume of black smoke rising up behind the trees.

The identities of the three people on the plane have not been released, and nobody on the ground was hurt.

Ken Defreitas, a local resident and a volunteer with the West Babylon Fire Department, said his doorbell cam captured the explosion in a wooded area near his home.

Defreitas heard a sound like a backfiring car followed by the sound of an explosion. He said he listened to his pager and then went outside, where he saw black smoke.

The two injured people were taken to Stony Brook Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries. NBC-TV News reported that nobody on the ground was hurt. Suffolk County cops shut down local roads while investigating the crash.
