On Tuesday morning in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a 67-year-old man’s car exploded when it was being refuelled at a petrol station, injuring both he and his wife

Their car burst at a petrol station when they were fuelling it, leaving one Brazilian man critically hurt and the other receiving minor injuries.

Mário Magalhes, 67, can be seen opening his car’s trunk in surveillance footage from the Rio de Janeiro station on Tuesday morning before the car blows up unexpectedly.

Magalhes was launched into the air and then crashed to the earth by the force of the car explosion.

Andreia Magalhes, his wife, escaped the blast’s full force when she was standing near to the front passenger door.

As the petrol station’s roof panelling fell to the ground, she can be seen on the footage escaping the car.

An attendant at the gas station ran over to check on her husband and signalled for assistance.

Local media sites stated that Mário Magalhes underwent surgery after being taken urgently to Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital. He’s in critical shape.

At the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, Andreia Magalhes received treatment for less serious wounds after being admitted.

He was driving across from me as I filled up. He then walked to the car’s trunk and opened it. Taxi driver Estevo Aguiar told the daily O Dia that there was an explosion the instant he did that.

He was covered in it. We initially fled out of fear, but later went to assist.

The vehicle’s gas cylinder, according to Hugo Ruan, a 25-year-old attendant at the petrol station, was rusted.

The car was last inspected on August 31, 2021, according to Henrique Schneider, the director of the vehicle inspection agency, which is a joint owner of the gas station, and the gas cylinder needed to be serviced in January. He claimed he wasn’t sure if the gas cylinder had inspection documents.
