He stated, “I gave a responsibility to defend the freedom and independence of my motherland, the Russian Federation, within its borders, and not to engage aggressive military operations as a member of my country’s armed forces to conquer the lands of another state.”

According to his wife, Major Mikhail Zhilin has opposed the war and now risks up to 15 years in prison and torture.
