Cassper Nyovest and Priddy Ugly had a press conference last week at Moloko Pretoria in advance of their exhibition boxing battle this weekend at the Sun Arena in Pretoria.
Nyovest appeared to take a jab at AKA and K.O when he remarked that their most recent chart-topping singles, “Sete” and “Lemons,” are not genuinely hip hop songs but rather Afrobeats-influenced.
“Listening to ‘Sete’ and listening to afrobeats is identical,” he remarked.
“However, it’s a hot song. Thankfully, everyone else is free to explore, but as soon as I touch another sound, I hear, “Yho, you’re insulting hip-hop.” It’s difficult.”
I asked him what he thought about Afrobeats and amapiano and how the sounds of the continent are combining after the press conference.
I also asked him to elaborate on his comments regarding “Sete” and “Lemons.” I believe that Africa currently resembles one thing. Each passing moment brings us closer together. Amapiano is exactly as popular in Nigeria as it is in South Africa, which is dope.
“Therefore, I believe we all influence one another. There are Nigerian men and Afrobeats men producing amapiano, and now some of our major performers are beginning to produce Afrobeats.
“I do not dislike that. I was only emphasizing that, from what I’ve observed, everyone else can play with noises and it’s okay. As soon as I do it, I am no longer a rapper.
Everyone has something to say when you’re the most powerful.”
