NYC receives approval to reject a contentious contract with Runway Towing

The city can halt a contentious contract with a Queens towing company that has been accused of overcharging motorists.

Runway Towing, situated in Ozone Park, has been granted exclusive towing rights on nine city roadways. The state’s First Judicial Department concluded last month that the city’s Department of Consumer and Work Protection may deny Runway’s contract renewal request.

The contentious towing company has been granted a monopoly on nine city highways.

“[DCWP] determined rationally that… Runway repeatedly charged excessive towing and storage fees for tows performed,” the tribunal noted in its Dec. 22 ruling.

Runway, which has earned more than $200 million from its contract since 2010, has been accused of routinely overcharging clients by charging additional costs to circumvent a regulated towing price cap.

Its most recent contract with the city expires on January 31.

A city law department representative told The Post, “We’re pleased with the decision.”

Runway did not respond to messages immediately.
