North Korea threatens action without precedent in response to joint military drills

Friday, North Korea vowed “unprecedentedly constant, strong responses” if South Korea and the United States proceed with scheduled military exercises, accusing the partners of escalating regional tensions.

The North’s foreign ministry warned in a statement broadcast by state media KCNA that it will contemplate more military action if the United Nations Security Council, under the influence of the United States, continues to exert pressure on Pyongyang.

South Korea and the United States are preparing for their annual military drills in an effort to counter North Korea’s increasing nuclear and missile threats.

Seoul’s defense ministry announced on Friday that the allies will conduct tabletop exercises in Washington next week aimed at enhancing the operations of US nuclear assets, followed by routine springtime Freedom Shield drills in South Korea the following month.
