Nissan recalls over 800K SUVs in US and Canada over key defect that can turn off the car on motion

Nissan has issued a recall for more than 809,000 small SUVs in the US and Canada due to a key problem that can cause the ignition to shut off while driving.

The recall affects certain Rogue models from 2014 to 2020 and Rogue Sports from 2017 to 2022. The affected SUVs have jackknife folding keys that may not stay fully open.

If the key is partially folded while driving, the driver could inadvertently turn off the engine by touching the fob. This can cause a loss of engine power, power brakes, and prevent airbags from inflating in a crash.

While there have been no reported crashes or injuries caused by the issue, Nissan has not yet determined a fix for the problem.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive an interim letter in March instructing them not to attach anything else to the key ring. Later, they will receive another letter with instructions to bring their SUVs in for repairs.

Nissan advises owners with keys that won’t stay in the open position to contact their dealers.
