The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy massively, the military and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a rigorous operation that would end the cases of banditry and cattle rustling in parts of the country, especially in Kebbi state.
Senate also urged the Chief of Defence Staff to establish an operational base within area councils of Kebbi state affected by the criminality, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the lingering problem.
These were some of the resolutions reached by the Senate, following a motion on the need to surmount all kinds of kidnappings, banditry, and related security challenges.
It was sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn N’Allah and twelve other Senators.
In his Lead debate on the motion, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Airforce, Senator Bala Ibin N’Allah, called for a more futuristic and decisive policy to permanently tackle the issues of insecurity within the northwest and Nigeria as a whole.
He expressed worry that; “If urgent steps to tackle the security challenge are not taken, the peace-loving communities may be forced to resort to self-defence by acquiring arms & ammunition, a development if allowed, may eventually turn Nigeria into a battlefield where the slightest provocation may result in violent combat among the civilian population.
”
The four-point resolution adopted by the senate, also wants the ministry of humanitarian affairs to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials to the affected areas.
It further called on Non-Governmental Organizations and private philanthropists to assist victims of such violence, and humanitarian disasters.
