Nigeria Labour Congress to Decide Fate of Indefinite Strike Today
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is poised to make a pivotal decision regarding its proposed indefinite strike during the union’s emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for today, Tuesday.
The meeting, called in response to the 21-day ultimatum issued by the NLC, holds significant implications for the future of labor actions in the country.

The NLC’s NEC comprises a wide spectrum of representatives, including presidents, general secretaries, and treasurers of all affiliate unions, state chairpersons and secretaries of NLC state councils, the chairperson of the NLC Youth Committee, and members of the National Administrative Council.
The union’s demands encompass various issues, including wage awards, the implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions, and allowances for public sector workers, as well as a review of the minimum wage, among other crucial matters.

A high-ranking official within the NLC has disclosed that the congress is unwavering in its position regarding demands from the federal government.

The official emphasized that the government has had ample time to address labor concerns, pointing out that it has been four months since the removal of petrol subsidies.
TUC Awaits Government Feedback
In parallel developments, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has been engaged in negotiations with the Federal Government following the removal of subsidies.
A recent meeting between TUC representatives and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, included discussions on critical issues raised by organized labor.
The minister assured the TUC of the President’s full briefing on these concerns and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing them.
Status of Negotiations
As of now, the TUC is awaiting feedback from the government following these discussions.
While the labor movements express their concerns and demands, government officials, such as the Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, have conveyed that engagements are ongoing and have assured that there is “no cause for alarm.”
