Less than twenty-four hours after her abrupt departure as First Minister and head of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon’s political ambitions in Scotland appear to be fading away.

Senior SNP members have disclosed their intention to abandon her signature Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which would let teenagers to begin transitioning at age 16.

The very controversial Holyrood proposal was vetoed by Westminster under devolution laws, and Ms. Sturgeon’s legal fight will be dropped, according to the Telegraph.

Simultaneously, Unionists celebrated her departure as a “generational setback” for the independence campaign, while a Tory minister declared it the best day since the 2014 referendum.

Last night, some 250 unionist supporters gathered in Glasgow’s George Square to celebrate the departure of the First Minister by waving Union Jack flags, popping champagne corks, and even dancing the conga.

Up to five SNP officials are anticipated to seek to succeed Ms. Sturgeon in what may be a nasty contest between her closest friends and more socially conservative figures.

This evening, the SNP’s National Executive Committee will meet to determine the parameters of a two- to three-month leadership campaign
