Nicola Sturgeon has referred to childless women as “cold-hearted bimbos” who choose their professions before having a family.

In the past, the First Minister, who is now 52 years old and has been married to fellow Scottish National Party member Peter Murrell for more than a decade, was subjected to intense scrutiny about her inability to have children.

Yesterday, in an interview with The Guardian, she said that it was vital to speak up about her experience, ‘because if you are a woman in a top position without children, it is assumed that you are a heartless b**** who chose to prioritize her career above having children.’

She said that although her private life has been exposed to undue scrutiny and discussion, “guys just don’t grasp it.” She continued, “The ideal example is [Alex] Salmond – I cannot remember a single interview he gave as First Minister or SNP leader discussing why he did not have children.”

Miss Sturgeon also said that she felt obligated to decrease the stigma associated with the menopause, stating, “If there are things you can do to try to shift the dial a little bit, I’ve got a duty to do that.”

When asked to describe what constitutes a woman — an issue that has stumped or been avoided by many prominent politicians – she said that it includes women who were born female as well as transgender women. She said, “The great majority of women are individuals like us, who were born women and are biological women, and a very tiny percentage are trans women – who are women.”
