Tuesday, authorities charged a man from New York City with smuggling three Burmese pythons into the United States from Canada.

In 2018, according to the Associated Press, Calvin Bautista, 36, smuggled three Burmese python snakes in his pants while riding a bus across the U.S.-Canadian border.

According to a statement from the Department of Justice, the allegations brought against Bautista are merely accusations; however, if convicted, Bautista faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The US Fish & Wildlife Service and US Customs and Border Protection are conducting an investigation into the Bautista case.
