The Department of Basic Education has published the confirmed and suggested school calendars for the academic years 2025 and 2026.

According to The South African website, interior schools began on January 11, whilst coastal schools began a week later (18 January).

However, beginning in 2024 and continuing through 2025 and 2026, the department anticipates that schools in both coastal and inland regions will begin and end at the same time.

In the coming years, with more automobiles on the road and families returning home at similar times to prepare for the start of the school year, vacationers will need to plan better.

YEARS OF THE YEARS 2024, 2025, AND 2026
The public school calendar for 2024 begins on 17 January and concludes on 11 December, for a total of 203 school days – four more than in 2022 and 2023.

In addition, there will be fewer school holidays in 2024, as the calendar only allows for 25 days off, compared to 32 days in 2023 and 33 days in 2022.

The terms shall be as follows:

17 January until 20 March
Second Term: April 3 to June 14
Third Term: July 9 to September 20
Fourth Term: October 1 to December 11

All schools will begin on January 15 and terminate on December 10 according the officially approved and published school calendar for 2025.

During school terms, the calendar accommodates 199 school days, 27 school holidays, and 10 public and special holidays.

The terms shall be as follows:

15 January through 28 March
Second Term: April 8 to June 27
Third Term: July 22 to October 3
Fourth Term: October 13 to December 10

The 2026 calendar, which is currently open for public comment, offers a start date of 14 January and an end date of 9 December for all schools.

In 2026, the school year will consist of 200 school days, 27 school holidays, and seven public and exceptional holidays.

The terms offered are:

14 January to 27 March
Second Term: April 8 to June 26
Third Term: July 21 to October 2
Fourth Term: October 13 to December 9
