Nevada wild horse killer reward doubles

The prize has been increased to $10,000 as officials continue their search for the killer or killers of five wild horses killed last October in eastern Nevada, approximately 70 miles west of the Utah state line.

Four horses were discovered dead within 600 yards of each other on November 16 in Jakes Valley, approximately 30 miles west of Ely and 2 miles south of U.S. Highway 50.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said that a fifth horse was still alive but critically injured, necessitating euthanasia.

The bureau stated Thursday that the American Wild Horse Campaign would contribute $5,000 to the agency’s $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those guilty for the deaths of the horses.

“We believe that increasing this reward will lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this brutality,” said Holly Gann Bice, the campaign’s director of government relations.

A necropsy revealed that the horses’ ages ranged from approximately 18 months to six years. The animals were murdered on or around November 16, when a member of the public reported finding them, according to the agency.

Bice stated, “The perpetrator(s) of these horrific atrocities should be brought to justice, and we thank the Bureau of Land Management for offering a reward to discover them.”

As part of the agency’s enforcement of the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971, the BLM investigates and prosecutes the killing of wild horses.
