NATO Secretary General attends a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group

On Wednesday (16 November 2022), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg participated in a virtual meeting of the U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group to discuss the sustained major support for Ukraine’s right to self-defense and future priorities.

Yesterday’s round of Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, civilian infrastructure, and civilians, according to the Secretary General, is a sharp reminder of the savagery of Russia’s illegal conflict. He emphasized that the mission is to continue aiding Ukraine for as long as necessary and to prevent escalation. In addition, he emphasized the necessity to help Ukraine with additional air defense systems, as well as winter clothing, fuel, and medical supplies. He applauded the fact that NATO Allies are increasing their military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine. In addition, he emphasized ongoing NATO efforts to replenish Allied inventories and accelerate industrial production, including today’s Conference of National Armaments Directors at NATO Headquarters.

Mr. Stoltenberg praised U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley for hosting the meeting and for the United States’ robust leadership. The Contact Group is comprised of international defense ministers and chiefs of defense in order to coordinate support for Ukraine.
