MULTIMILLION DRUG BUST IN MPUMALANGA

Earlier this week in Mpumalanga, crystal meth (tik) worth millions of rand was recovered in a vehicle during a police stop-and-search operation. Two people were apprehended at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza and have already made court appearances.

On Tuesday, January 17, the Kaapmuiden police and the Komatipoort K9 unit conducted a stop and search operation.

Dogs from the K9 Unit discovered drugs concealed in various compartments of a Gauteng-registered vehicle. There were found 58 plastic bags holding 53 kg of tik.

Tuesday at around 10:00 a.m., Reginald Francisco De Maura Tomàs, 32, and Reginaldo Joào Tomàs, 30, were arrested.

The estimated value of the drugs is R53 million, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle was not reported stolen. Both suspects made a brief appearance at Barberton Magistrate’s Court yesterday and remanded in custody for the second court appearance in Low’s Creek Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 19 January 2023,” said the police spokesperson.

Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the police commissioner of Mpumalanga, said that her region will not be used as a “smooth passage” for drug traffickers.
